| DUNES 2001 by Michel JACQUET, translated by Paul PONTOIS Everything
started around 5:00 PM, on Friday June 14th, with the arrival of early birds Catherine and
René CANDEUR in their Cordouan. They had left Namur in Belgium in the morning at 10:00 AM
and made the trip in three flights of 2 hours.
On Friday 15th, other forerunners arrived and we enjoyed a little barbecue to
comfort and feed these nice fellows.
On Saturday 16th, things started to become more active with the arrival of
numerous participants. We could see new machines, some of them just out of the workshop,
some still under construction.
Saturday is the day I like best in the Dunes Fly-In. During this day I make
time to meet up with good friends again, which is always so pleasant and also share the
opportunity to welcome new faces and to help newcomers meeting other participants. Then,
the Flying-Flea family does the rest.
At lunch, on Saturday, we were 83 and 107 for dinner, that is 30% more than
last year.
Unfortunately, we again had a very strong wind. Aeolus was back to Dunes, maybe
to show to those who do not believe it that a flying-flea can fly even if the wind is
strong.
Yves SEGONDs demonstrated it. His acrobatic but perfectly controlled
arrival attracted everyones attention.
On Sunday June 17th, the same windy weather, but fortunately no rain. Other
participants arrived. We discovered new machines, but several Poux could not come because
of the uncertain weather forecast.
After the traditional welcome drink, the 295 guests sat down to eat and enjoyed
the gourmets menu of the day. All our talks and chats were, of course, about our
birds. A wonderful time during which everyone shares his experience and gives his opinion.
Others take advantage of the discussion to collect as much information as possible.
In the afternoon, the wind was exceptionally strong (gusts of 50 mph). Alain
MIGNETs Balerit, accompanied by Yves SEGONDs HM-293 showed skeptics that the
Pou can fly under difficult atmospheric conditions.
At the end of the afternoon many friends had to leave us to go home. But like
every year at night, 95 persons who did not want to leave us so soon, shared a friendly
meal, enjoying during a few more hours, the warm atmosphere which reigns over our Dunes
Fly-Ins.
